"The Holy Mass is a prayer itself, even the highest prayer that exists.  It is the sacrifice, dedicated by our Redeemer at the cross, and repeated every day on the altar.  If you wish to hear Mass as it should be heard, you must follow with eye, heart and mouth all that happens at the altar.  Further, you must pray with the priest the holy words said by him in the name of Christ and which Christ says by him.  You have to associate your heart with the holy feelings which are contained in these words and in this manner you ought to follow all that happens on the altar.  When acting in this way you have prayed Holy Mass."

His Holiness, Pope Pius X

RITE I A psalm, hymn, or anthem may be sung.

The people standing, the Celebrant may say,

Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

    R. And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

In place of the above, from Easter Day through Pentecost,

    Alleluia. Christ is Risen.

    R. The Lord is ris'n indeed. Alleluia.

In Lent and on other penitential occasions,

Bless the Lord who forgiveth all our sins.

    R. His mercy endureth for ever.

The Celebrant says,

Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

The Summary of the Law may be said, or the Decalogue.

Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.
